Classifier Fusion for SVM-Based Multimedia Semantic Indexing

International audienceConcept indexing in multimedia libraries is very useful for users searching and browsing but it is a very challenging research problem as well. Combining several modalities, features or concepts is one of the key issues for bridging the gap between signal and semantics. In this pa- per, we present three fusion schemes inspired from the classical early and late fusion schemes. First, we present a kernel-based fusion scheme which takes advantage of the kernel basis of classifiers such as SVMs. Second, we integrate a new normalization process into the early fusion scheme. Third, we present a contextual late fusion scheme to merge classification scores of several concepts. We conducted experiments in the framework of the official TRECVID'06 evaluation campaign and we obtained signif- icant improvements with the proposed fusion schemes relatively to usual fusion schemes

Recitoire: a tool for qualitative surveys involving citizens in urban planning projects

The implication of citizens in the existing modes of consultation (public meeting, opinions polls) is often limited and not representative. New solutions for facilitating citizens’ involvement in both the diagnosis and the construction of the city need to be found. We propose here a prototype called Recitoire, as a support for qualitative surveys involving citizens in urban planning projects. Using a mobile application, a data collect is performed which includes the path followed by a citizen (her/his trace is kept) and the different kinds of media files she/he produces all along the path to illustrate her/his feelings and impressions on a given thematic - chosen for the survey by urban planners. A server application centralizes the collected data and offers an interface for both their exploration and their exploitation by the actors of the urban project

Explorer la dynamique démographique mondiale en ligne

International audienceThe growth of the world population is a challenge for humanity. The French National Institute for Demographic Studies (INED) wishes to contribute to the debate, and its Web site designed a freely accessible online tool for interactive and dynamic mapping of population indicators evolution. A set of annual measured or estimated demographic indicators for the years 1950 to 2050 at the country level are shown in a cartographic environment integrating territorial and spatial dimensions in an original manner. Data are drawn from the statistics of the United Nations Population Division and the aim is to show and get demographic trends on a planetary scale. This application was specially designed to be used by teachers and their students. The novelty is the combination of both spatial and time dimensions that give the application potentialities in a territorial decision making framework.La croissance de la population mondiale pose un défi à l'humanité. Les différences de fécondité et l'accélération des migrations redistribuent la croissance démographique et réorganisent le peuplement humain. Pour alimenter le débat public dans ce domaine, l'Institut national d'études démographiques (INED) a conçu un outil de cartographie dynamique et interactive accessible en ligne gratuitement sur son site internet (www.ined.fr). Il présente un ensemble d'indicateurs démographiques mesurés ou projetés annuellement entre 1950 et 2050 au niveau des pays dans un environnement intégrant de manière originale les dimensions territoriale et spatiale. Les données sont issues des statistiques de la Division de la population des Nations unies et l'objectif est de donner à voir et à comprendre l'évolution du phénomène démographique à l'échelle mondiale. ANASTASIA : recommandation de séquences d'activités spatio-temporelles

National audienceAs amount of activities available for users and their variety have grown, personalised recommendation of activities sequences has become an important challenge. However, most of recommender systems do not consider temporal constraints of activities, making the recommendation hard for user to follow. In this article, we describe a novel approach for recommendation of competing activities limited in time. It makes use of historical records of users' activities in order to mine users' behavioral patterns, and combines different contextual elements (popularity, demographic and spatio-temporal information). We present an evaluation framework and a dataset that will allow us to evaluate our approach.Avec l’augmentation du nombre et de la variété des activités accessibles par les utilisateurs, la recommandation personnalisée de séquences d’activités devient un enjeu important. Or, la plupart des systèmes de recommandation ne tiennent pas compte des contraintes temporelles liées aux activités, ce qui rend la recommandation difficile à suivre par un utilisateur. Dans cet article, nous décrivons une nouvelle approche pour la recommandation de séquences d’activités limitées dans le temps et concurrentes. Elle s’appuie sur l’historique des activités des utilisateurs pour extraire des motifs comportementaux et intègre différents éléments contextuels (popularité, informations démographiques et spatio-temporelles). Nous présentons un protocole d’évaluation et un jeu de données qui permettra l’évaluation de notre approche

Using Topic Concepts for Semantic Video Shots Classification

International audienceAutomatic semantic classification of video databases is very useful for users searching and browsing but it is a very challenging re- search problem as well. Combination of visual and text modalities is one of the key issues to bridge the semantic gap between signal and semantic. In this paper, we propose to enhance the classification of high- level concepts using intermediate topic concepts and study various fu- sion strategies to combine topic concepts with visual features in order to outperform unimodal classifiers. We have conducted several experiments on the TRECVID'05 collection and show here that several intermediate topic classifiers can bridge parts of the semantic gap and help to detect high-level concepts

CLIPS and NII at TRECvid: Shot segmentation and feature extraction

International audienceThis paper presents the systems used by CLIPS- IMAG laboratory. We participated to shot seg- mentation and high-level extraction tasks. We fo- cus this year on High-Level Features Extraction task, based on key frames classification. We pro- pose an original and promising framework for in- corporating contextual information (from image content) into the concept detection process. The proposed method combines local and global clas- sifiers with stacking, using SVM.
